TRANS—INSTRUMENTALISM

Statement

Can a single work be written for all instruments?

TRANS-INSTRUMENTALISM began with that question.TRANS-INSTRUMENTALISM

A figure whose head dissolves into strands of smoke, on black.
Still from the 2025 series teaser2025

With the physical instrument removed from the stage and the body tracked by motion capture (R-IoT), the performer’s body itself became the instrument.

Percussive and instrument-specific gestures resisted translation into a coherent musical or visual language — and that limitation became the creative problem.

Body and instrument: neither merged nor separate.

Never a completed transformation. Always mid-process.

Day 0 / TRANS-INSTRUMENTALISM

For performer, video, motion capture and electronics

Day 0 was developed during the IRCAM Cursus 2021–2022, the composition and computer music programme. R-IoT sensors link the performer’s body movement to musical parameters, alongside video.

A multidisciplinary performance and musical research project, it explores the hybridisation of human bodies and instruments through gesture, sound and technology: a trans-instrumental space, a liminal zone where bodies and tools merge, generating an unstable yet intimate musical expression.

Live electronics and gesture-based interaction meet video and visual augmentation, along a dramaturgical axis of transformation, fragmentation and hybrid identity.

RêVeRie / TRANS-INSTRUMENTALISM

For instrumental trio and synthesiser in virtual reality器楽三重奏とシンセサイザーのためのVR作品

2025 Création

A work for instrumental trio and synthesiser in virtual reality, created in collaboration with Ensemble Contrechamps.

RêVeRie scales the series to ensemble format, bringing live musicians together with virtual and augmented reality. It is conceived as three interconnected spaces — the physical concert hall, virtual reality and augmented reality — with music as the only medium common to all three worlds.

Presented at GIFF — Geneva International Film Festival in LOCUS SOLUS, a programme of VR works with live instruments: 30 performances, each for an audience of 16 wearing individual VR headsets.

Babel / TRANS-INSTRUMENTALISM

Interactive audiovisual installation

2026 In progress

Babel shifts the research toward speech, treating the spoken word itself as a trans-instrumental material: at once acoustic, semantic, visual and synthetic.

A visitor’s voice passes through machine listening, transcription, semantic transformation, synthetic speech, sound and image. Rather than overcoming language barriers through perfect translation, the work treats recognition, mistranslation, delay, accent, silence and fragmentation as compositional material.

The AI and voice-technology layer, developed with Frederik Bous, is not a conversational system but a means of fragmenting, translating, misrecognising and re-synthesising speech. “Babel” names translation as well as its failure — and asks where the boundaries of an instrument, and of the speaking or performing body, begin and end.

The Solo Series — in development

A wind instrument, live electronics and video (TouchDesigner). Acoustic analysis becomes the main control source: Max/MSP extracts the spectral centroid, breath noise and harmonic structure — the invisible complexity inside the sound — while MediaPipe follows the embouchure. What the ear cannot separate becomes visible.
